Portrait of Hillary Cox

Bio

My name is Hillary Cox and I've lived in Maine my whole life. I'm 23 years old and I have two sisters, one older than me and one who is younger. My younger sister Sara and I (who is 20) have always been partners in crime. My family has 3 dogs, all of them pomeranians. They're lovable orange balls of fluff. I work at the Home Depot in Bangor and I've been there for a little over 4 years. It's a pretty good job, definitely the best I've had so far. I'm a shift leader on the front end which carries a fair amount of responsibility. Even with that in mind it's a really fun job and Home Depot has been a great company to work for. As far as hobbies go I enjoy reading, writing, photography, grapic design and all kinds of art. I'm interested in working with photoshop and illustrator. In High School I worked on a literary magazine for 3 out of 4 years which gave me some good editing skills and taught me how to use a lot of different programs. Some more recent but not currently practiced hobbies of mine involve playing different video games. With classes starting I've had to pretty much quit everything, but I'm a total nerd at heart. I also enjoy jewelry making and beading, and over the past couple weeks I've been teaching myself how to crochet. When I'm not being an old lady or a geek I like to go out with friends and dance. Overall I'm a really busy but happy person.

Creative Statement

The story of how I became interested in New Media is a very simple one. I was ringing register one night at work when a young woman I went to middle school with came through my line and I recognized her first thing. We struck up a conversation and talked about work and what each of us had accomplished with school so far. She had already graduated from UMaine with a degree while I was still picking away slowly at classes in Liberal Arts at a commmunity college. I had no idea what I wanted to do or what direction I was going in, just that I was tired of working long hours and just drifting through college. I asked her what her major was and what it involved and my interest picked up. There were other customers behind her so our conversation was cut short, but she left me with a list of names and an already growing interest in New Media. I did some research, and honestly it didn't have to be extensive to show that New Media really was what I had been looking for. It seemed to fit perfectly. And so now that I am finally buckling down and going full-time, I'm beginning to get a feeling for myself just what it's about, and I'm very excited to see where it goes.
